Onigiri are traditionally shaped by hand, but a mold can make the size and shape more consistent.
This set includes two triangular onigiri molds, a rectangular musubi maker, and a textured rice scoop. It can be used with warm Japanese short-grain rice and a variety of fillings.
What Is Included
The set contains:
- One small triangular onigiri mold
- One large triangular onigiri mold
- One rectangular musubi maker
- One textured rice scoop
- Matching presses for the molds
Small Triangle Mold
The small mold creates a compact rice ball suitable for snacks, side dishes, and smaller lunch portions.
Fill it halfway with warm rice, add a small amount of filling, and cover with another layer of rice before pressing.
Large Triangle Mold
The large mold creates a meal-sized onigiri with more space for rice and filling.
It can be used for tuna mayo, chicken soboro, grilled salmon, umeboshi, salted kombu, and other traditional fillings.
Rectangular Musubi Maker
The pink rectangular press creates a longer block of rice.
It can be used for musubi, layered rice snacks, or rectangular rice portions topped with ingredients such as grilled meat, egg, or vegetables.
Textured Rice Scoop
The white rice scoop has a textured surface designed to reduce sticking.
It can be used to transfer warm short-grain rice into the molds and spread the rice evenly around the filling.
How to Use the Triangle Mold
1. Prepare the mold
Lightly wet the inside of the mold with water.
2. Add the first layer of rice
Fill the mold approximately halfway with warm Japanese short-grain rice.
3. Add the filling
Make a small space in the center and add a modest amount of filling.
Avoid placing the filling too close to the edges.
4. Cover with rice
Add enough rice to cover the filling.
5. Press gently
Place the matching lid on the mold and press gently.
Too much pressure can make the rice ball dense.
6. Remove the onigiri
Release the shaped rice from the mold and add a strip of roasted nori if desired.
Fillings to Try
The triangle molds can be used with:
- Tuna mayo
- Chicken soboro
- Grilled salmon
- Umeboshi
- Salted kombu
- Bonito flakes with soy sauce
- Furikake mixed into the rice
